Crochet bar for fan-shaped dishcloth

Materials:

  • Crochet hook in a size appropriate for your yarn (I used a size H-8/5mm hook for worsted weight yarn)
  • Worsted weight yarn in two colors (I used cream and light blue)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge:

4 rows of 7 bars in cream = 2 inches

Instructions:

Row 1:

  1. Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
  2. Double crochet 2 times in the third chain from the hook.
  3. Chain 2.
  4. Double crochet 1 time in the same space as the previous double crochet.
  5. Chain 2.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5, crocheting 2 double crochets in the next chain space, 1 double crochet in the same space, and chaining 2 in between each group of double crochets, until you have 6 groups of double crochets separated by chains.
  7. Turn your work.

Row 2:

  1. Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
  2. Double crochet in the first chain space from the previous row.
  3. Chain 2.
  4. Double crochet 2 times in the next chain space, 1 double crochet in the same space as the previous double crochet. Repeat from * to * across the row, crocheting in the chain spaces between the groups of double crochets from the previous row.
  5. Turn your work.

Row 3:

  1. Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
  2. Double crochet in the first chain space from the previous row.
  3. Chain 2.
  4. Double crochet 3 times in the next chain space, 1 double crochet in the same space as the previous double crochet. Repeat from * to * across the row, crocheting in the chain spaces between the groups of double crochets from the previous row.
  5. Turn your work.

Row 4:

  1. Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
  2. Double crochet in the first chain space from the previous row.
  3. Chain 2.
  4. Double crochet 4 times in the next chain space, 1 double crochet in the same space as the previous double crochet. Repeat from * to * across the row, crocheting in the chain spaces between the groups of double crochets from the previous row.
  5. Turn your work.

Continue increasing:

Continue crocheting rows in this way, increasing the number of double crochets in each chain space by 1 in each row. When you reach the desired width for your dishcloth, crochet one row without increasing.

Change color:

Fasten off the cream yarn and join in the light blue yarn. Crochet one row without increasing, following the same pattern as the previous rows.

Decrease:

In the next row, decrease the number of double crochets in each chain space by 1. To do this, simply crochet one fewer double crochet in each chain space than you did in the previous row. Continue decreasing in this way until you have only 3 groups of double crochets separated by chains.

Finish:

Crochet one final row without increasing or decreasing. Fasten off the yarn and weave in any loose ends.

Tips:

  • You can adjust the size of your dishcloth by starting with a different number of chain stitches in the first row.
  • You can experiment with different colors and yarn weights to create different effects.
  • Be sure to keep your tension consistent throughout your work so that your dishcloth lays flat.
