How to make crochet motif

Crochet motifs are small, often square or circular, crochet patterns that can be joined together to make larger projects like blankets, scarves, or garments. Here’s a basic guide on how to make a simple granny square motif, which is one of the most popular types:

🧶 Basic Granny Square Motif (Beginner-Friendly)

🧵 Materials:

  • Yarn (choose any weight, but worsted is good for beginners)
  • Matching crochet hook (check your yarn label)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)

🧩 Pattern Instructions:

Step 1: Make a Slip Knot and Chain 4

  • Make a slip knot and place it on your hook.
  • Chain (ch) 4.
  • Slip stitch (sl st) into the first chain to form a ring.

Step 2: Round 1

  • Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet – dc).
  • Work 2 dc into the ring, chain 2.
  • Repeat: 3 dc, ch 2 — do this 3 more times (total of 4 sets of 3 dc).
  • Slip stitch into the top of the beginning ch-3 to close the round.

Step 3: Round 2

  • Slip stitch into the next 2 stitches to reach the corner space (ch-2 space).
  • Chain 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc into same corner, ch 2, 3 dc into same corner.
  • In next ch-2 space: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
  • Repeat around until all corners are filled.
  • Slip stitch to join.

Step 4: Round 3 and Beyond (Optional)

  • Continue working in each corner space with 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc.
  • In side spaces, just do 3 dc (no chain).
  • Repeat for as many rounds as you want to grow the square.

Step 5: Finish Off

  • When done, cut yarn, leaving a 6″ tail.
  • Pull yarn through the loop to fasten off.
  • Weave in ends with a yarn needle.
