Easy flower crochet pattern for beginners

This simple dishcloth pattern uses just one stitch – the single crochet – with a clever twist to create a textured bar design. Perfect for beginners or experienced crocheters looking for a quick project, this dishcloth works up beautifully and makes a lovely gift.

Materials:

  • Cotton yarn suitable for dishcloths (1 skein)
  • Crochet hook size appropriate for yarn (e.g., H/8 – 5.00mm for medium weight yarn)
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:

18 stitches x 14 rows in single crochet = 4 inches x 4 inches (gauge may vary slightly depending on yarn and hook size)

Finished Size:

Approximately 9 inches x 9 inches (adjust by adding or subtracting chains in the starting chain)

Skill Level:

Beginner

Instructions:

1. Foundation Chain:

Start with a chain of 31 stitches (or a multiple of 2 + 1 for desired dishcloth width).

2. Single Crochet Row:

Turn your work. Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over (yo), pull up a loop. Yarn over again, pull through two loops on your hook. This is your first single crochet stitch.

Continue single crocheting in each chain across the row, until you reach the end. Turn your work.

3. Single Row Bar Row:

This is the key row that creates the textured bar.

Chain 1. Insert your hook into the third stitch from the hook (skip two stitches). Yarn over, pull up a loop. Yarn over again, pull through two loops on your hook.

Now, instead of turning your work, insert your hook into the second stitch you skipped (the stitch directly below the stitch you just made). Yarn over, pull up a loop. Yarn over again, pull through three loops on your hook.

Repeat this technique of skipping one stitch, single crocheting, then inserting your hook into the skipped stitch and working a single crochet with three loops, across the entire row.

4. Repeat:

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your dishcloth reaches the desired length.

5. Finishing:

Fasten off by tying a knot with the last working loop and weaving in the ends with your tapestry needle.

Tips:

  • Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each row for easier counting.
  • Experiment with different yarn colors to create a striped or variegated look.
  • Add a border around the dishcloth for a more finished look.
  • This pattern can be easily adjusted to make larger or smaller dishcloths. Simply change the number of starting chains and rows worked.
