Single-row crochet bar for easy dishcloth

Crochet dishcloths are a classic project, perfect for practicing stitches and gifting handmade goods. This pattern adds a touch of texture with a simple single row crochet bar, creating a beautiful and functional washcloth.

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials:

  • Cotton yarn suitable for dishcloths (approximately 200 yards)
  • Crochet hook size appropriate for chosen yarn (typically H/8 – 5.00mm)
  • Tapestry needle (optional, for weaving in ends)

Gauge:

14 stitches x 10 rows in single crochet = 4″ x 4″ (gauge swatch optional, adjust hook size if needed)

Finished Size:

Approximately 8″ x 8″ (adjust chain count for larger or smaller size)

Instructions:

Chain 30.

Row 1: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. Turn your work. (29 stitches)

Row 2: Chain 2 (counts as a single crochet), skip the first stitch, single crochet in each stitch across. Turn your work. (29 stitches)

Row 3: Single Row Crochet Bar:

  1. Insert your hook under both loops of the second stitch from the hook. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
  2. Insert your hook under both loops of the next stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should now have three loops on your hook.
  3. Yarn over and pull through two loops on your hook.
  4. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook. You have completed a single row crochet bar.
  5. Skip the next stitch.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 across the row, skipping one stitch between each bar. Turn your work.

Row 4: Chain 2, single crochet in each single crochet stitch across, slip stitch into the top of the turning chain from row 3. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until your dishcloth reaches the desired size. Finish with row 4.

Tips:

  • Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each row, helpful for beginners.
  • Maintain consistent tension for even stitches and a neat finish.
  • Adjust the chain count at the beginning for a larger or smaller dishcloth.
  • Experiment with different yarn colors and textures for variation.
  • Wash and dry your finished dishcloth before using.

Additional Notes:

  • This pattern creates a single row of crochet bars on each row. For a continuous bar effect, work row 3 without skipping stitches between bars.
  • You can add a border to your dishcloth for a more finished look.
  • There are many video tutorials available online that demonstrate the single row crochet bar stitch.
