SUPER ECONOMY OVAL CARPET | Video tutorial

Materials:

  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in your desired color(s). I used approximately 510 meters of Barroco Maxcolor yarn in color 1289.
  • Crochet hook: Size 3.5mm crochet hook.
  • Scissors and tapestry needle.
  • Optional: Measuring tape and stitch markers.

Abbreviations:

  • Ch: Chain
  • Dc: Double crochet
  • Sc: Single crochet
  • Inc: Increase (2 dc in same st)
  • Dec: Decrease (2 dc together)
  • Sl st: Slip stitch

Instructions:

  1. Foundation Chain: Make a foundation chain of 72 chains + 3 turning chains.
  2. Row 1: Dc in the 4th chain from the hook and in each chain across. Turn your work.
  3. Row 2: Ch 3, dc in each dc across. Turn your work.
  4. Rows 3-7: Repeat rows 2 and 3, working a total of 6 rows of dc.
  5. Increase Row: Ch 3, dc in the next dc, inc in the next dc, dc in the next 2 dc. Repeat this pattern across the row, ending with 2 dc in the last dc. Turn your work.
  6. Body of the Carpet: Continue working rows of dc, increasing 2 dc on either side of the oval every 7th row until you reach the desired width of your carpet. I worked a total of 21 rows of dc with increases for my carpet.
  7. Shaping the Oval: Once you have reached the desired width, it’s time to start shaping the oval. To do this, we will work dc decreases on either side of the oval every other row. Here’s how:
    • Row 1: Ch 3, dc in the next dc, dec, dc in the next 5 dc, inc, dc in the next dc to the end of the row.
    • Row 2: Ch 3, dc in each dc across.

Shaping the Oval for Economy Oval Carpet

  1. Continue decreasing: Repeat rows 1 and 2, decreasing on either side of the oval every other row until you have only 8 stitches remaining.
  2. Finishing the Carpet: Sl st all 8 stitches together to close the hole. Weave in all ends.

Tips:

  • You can adjust the size of your carpet by making more or fewer foundation chains and working more or fewer rows of dc.
  • If you want to add a border to your carpet, you can simply work a few rows of sc or dc around the edge.
  • This carpet is also a great way to use up leftover yarn!
